Karelian bobtail shorthair

One of the young and extremely interesting breeds that has won the hearts of cat lovers is the Karelian Shorthaired Bobtail. This very...

It has not yet been established who these cute cats came from. Perhaps her ancestors were wild domestic cats, which can still be found today in Karelia and in some neighboring regions and in Finland, or perhaps Norwegian forest cats. But the breed exists, it is recognized by most WCF clubs. And an important advantage of the breed, which has come a long way to world recognition, is that it was bred here, in Russia, in St. Petersburg.

Appearance of the Karelian Shorthaired Bobtail
Already from the name of the breed, you can determine that these are cats with short hair and a miniature tail in the form of a pompom. And like most short-haired breeds, its fur is thick with a soft and equally thick undercoat.

This Russian native cat comes in different colors. But white cats are especially beautiful. They also look wonderful in blue.

The eyes of this beautiful bobtail also attract attention. They are mainly the color of sunny amber, but some individuals have eyes of a magical emerald color. But kittens, although quite rarely, can be born with blue eyes.
Cute “pants” on the hind legs and an original “collar” on the neck give these compact cats a noble appearance, and proportional strong legs with small, neat paws also add sophistication and grace.

Some people confuse cats of this breed with the Kurilian Bobtail. But if you understand the breeds, then even from a photograph you will immediately notice obvious differences in appearance and obvious body structure features.

Let's talk about the behavior of the Karelian Shorthaired Bobtail
It is clear that the wild origin of the ancestors could not but affect the animal, and therefore a little of this “wildness” almost always lives in it. But she is positive. The cat is one of the best mouse hunters. Independent and self-confident, she will not betray her owners and will not switch to another for any tasty bait. They get used to their home, love it and their owners, even if they unfairly offend them (slap or yell at them). A creature that is forgiving by nature, but touchy, still quickly moves away and forgives the offender, especially if he “apologizes” to her by caressing her.
Pets love to play and quickly find a common language with children. But if they start bothering them too much, dragging and squeezing them, the cat will simply climb somewhere higher so that they won’t bother her.

The cat's voice is quiet and melodious. It’s hard to even call it a meow. It is more like the chirping of a small bird. And you don't hear it often. Bobtails do not like to voice, attracting attention to themselves. They find other methods for this, for example, touching the owner with their paw so that they can give him food or stroke him. So you need to study his sign language.

If you want to get yourself a cat of this breed, then keep in mind that they really like to sleep in the warmth. But you shouldn’t wake them up over trifles, they will be unhappy. At the same time, this breed is suitable for you if you do not like cats that are too sociable.

You will also like the fact that Karelian Bobtail males do not mark their territory, as many domestic cats do.

And finally about care

This cat breed has excellent health. They do not suffer from hereditary diseases. They are not afraid of severe frosts and snow, so they feel comfortable in a country house with a courtyard.

Grooming the coat will not take much time. Buy a special comb for combing and “stroke” it sometimes, but otherwise care for it as you would a regular house cat.

And believe me, the Karelian Bobtail will help maintain comfort and good mood in your home.
