How to wean a sphinx cat from tearing curtains

How to protect curtains from cat fun

Have you noticed that cats, especially young kittens, love curtains, or rather, climb and ride on them. This is how the kitten realizes its violent, restless energy. This spectacle is very funny to watch. But the curtains themselves suffer from this, and therefore your wallet, since such fun can cause the curtains to tear. And the cat could get hurt if, God forbid, the curtains and cornices end up on the floor.

How to save your curtains? Do not hang it - the room will not look very cozy. You can shorten or raise the curtains higher, as some housewives do, so that the kitten does not jump or catch the fabric with its tenacious paws - the aesthetic appearance of the room and the curtains themselves suffers. And it’s a pity for the curtains, especially the beautiful, expensive ones. There is only one way out - to wean the Sphynx kitten from this pleasant activity for him.

So, from the first days of a kitten’s stay in your home, you need to teach your pet good behavior, until climbing on curtains becomes a strong habit.

Take note:

— kittens of those cat breeds that are easier to train are more easily trained;

- It is more difficult to retrain an adult animal than a baby. By the way, adult cats are less interested in your curtains.

Let's start learning. "Unpleasant" signals

You can wean a kitten from riding on curtains with the help of water, because cats don’t like wet things. To do this, try lightly moistening the bottom of the curtains for a while (you can use a spray bottle). If your kitten doesn't like it, he'll soon become uninterested in curtains.

And even more effective is to splash some water on the Sphynx cat’s face every time she climbs onto the curtains. The unpleasant sensation of water will help your pet understand that it is better not to climb, otherwise encounters with unwanted splashes will continue. The method is almost ideal and absolutely safe for the animal.

This also includes odors that your cat cannot tolerate. She probably doesn't like the smells of citrus and black pepper. Spray the curtains with a solution of water with citrus juice or black pepper (boil a glass of water and 2 teaspoons of fresh ground black pepper).

Let's play scarecrows

It's no secret that cats don't like surprises. You can try to scare the cat when it climbs up the curtains with a loud, unexpected sound. Pour coins into a tin can for this (or come up with another rattle).

Ordinary rolled up newspaper will also work. Slam it loudly on a hard surface as soon as the cat is ready to “storm” the curtain, and then take your pet to a place where you can “pour” energy out of it. After several such sessions, at the sight of a newspaper, which is clearly visible from the curtains (preferably in your hands), the animal will abandon its plans. Your participation in this effective method is mandatory.

There are motion sensors that can be purchased without problems and attached to curtains. They will make sharp noises every time the cat tries to hang on to the curtains. Just don’t be afraid of these sounds, be prepared for them.

A sharp creaking or clapping sound, loud rustling noise, and even a shout can also be used as “scares.” Find your tool for managing your pet's behavior.

Looking for a reason

Sometimes it’s worth thinking about if a completely adult, seemingly calm, cat jumps onto the curtains. Watch, maybe this is a way for her to get onto the windowsill, but the curtains are in the way? Sphynx cats love to watch birds from the window. Keep the curtains open and place a piece of furniture near the window or free one that is near the window so that she can comfortably jump onto the windowsill. If the curtain was used by the cat for this purpose, it will no longer be needed.

Wise decisions

The described methods for saving curtains are not the best, although effective. It’s better to simply choose vertical blinds to match your interior instead of curtains. With them, it will be very difficult (almost impossible) for the cat to climb onto the window. And if they are moved to the edges, the cat’s object of interest will also be eliminated. You can also hang roller blinds or install pleated curtains on plastic windows. By the way, a cat is a cunning animal. And if he behaves decently in front of you, then in your absence he may have some fun on the curtains. So think about replacing fabric curtains with roller curtains.

The selection of a method for saving curtains from a cat is individual. Try it, look for something of your own. Good luck!
