Does the Sphynx cat like to sleep on the bed?
How do you feel about the fact that your beloved Sphynx cat prefers to sleep on the bed? Do you like how she purrs under your ear and warms you up in cold weather with her warmth? But most owners are not happy with this habit of their pets, especially if this cutie’s favorite place is the baby’s crib.
Of course, the cat should have its own place to sleep, and not on the owner’s bed. But how can I convince her of this? After all, she will jump again and again - even scold her, even push her. And when everyone falls asleep or goes about their business during the day, she will sleep peacefully in her favorite place, no matter how much you want it.
Can cats sleep in their owner's bed?
This question is for those who do not see anything wrong and even consider this established habit of an affectionate pet to be normal, and, moreover, a clean one. And one cannot deny the positive effect on the psyche of individual people: a surge of joy, a feeling of comfort that is caused by the presence of a pet curled up in a ball.
The danger lies in the parasitic disease of cats, toxoplasmosis. It occurs in a chronic form, without causing much concern to the animal. Cats can catch the disease while walking outside from food they find and eat. And raw meat used as feed can cause illness.
The spread of the disease from cats most often occurs through airborne droplets. Parasites are excreted in animals with toxoplasmosis through urine and saliva. It is no coincidence that pet owners are reminded to thoroughly wash their hands after handling them. And you should also show the animal to the veterinarian periodically.
In people who come into contact with a sick pet, toxoplasmosis can occur not only from unwashed hands, but also through damage to the skin and mucous membranes. The disease manifests itself in different ways: in some it causes general malaise, in others it causes insomnia, tachycardia, and fears. As a result of infection with this parasitic disease, a person may develop pneumonia, focal necrotizing nephritis, or hepatitis.
Nowadays, many owners have turned Sphynx cats into desperate homebodies, neaties and spoiled creatures who eat only the best special cat food. Therefore, the question of whether the cat sleeps in your bed is up to you to decide. However, it is better to wean it off. This is also proven by studies conducted by the United Professional Sleep Society, which revealed that a significant proportion of animal lovers (more than 10%) have sleep problems. And this can cause bad mood, decreased cognitive (mental) abilities, and health problems. So it’s not worth sacrificing good sleep.
How to stop a Sphynx cat from sleeping with you?
Let us note right away that it is better not to teach. But if an animal has developed such a habit, it will be difficult to cope with it, because lovers of independence can also take revenge, which is expressed in various dirty tricks. But if you wish:
- try to scare it away with a spray bottle, spraying it on its face every time it jumps on the bed;
- stick tape to the bedspread on both sides. The cat will feel uncomfortable as soon as its paws stick and will prefer to look for another comfortable place;
- place a prepared place for the cat to sleep in a room where no one sleeps, and close it there at night. If he asks to come to you - be patient;
- Cover the bed with oilcloth or film during the day. The discomfort and feeling of cold from them will stimulate the cat to go to sleep in its house.
Or simply install an individual cat bed (sleep house) next to yours at the same level as hers. Lure your pet there, pet him, you can even give him a hand. In cold weather, you can put an electric mat or a warm heating pad in the sleeping house. Gradually, the cat will get used to such conditions and will willingly climb into its nest for the night.
