How to properly remove a tick?
- Wear disposable gloves.
- Fill the container with rubbing alcohol.
- Gently pick up your pet and distract him with a treat.
- Part the sides of your dog's hair and make sure it is actually a tick and not a wart-like skin growth.
- Apply a cotton swab soaked in alcohol or vodka to the tick, hold it there for five minutes, the tick will become intoxicated and it will be easier to remove.
- Gently grasp the tick with tweezers or a special tick remover (tweezers) as close to the animal's skin as possible, and then slowly, in a circular motion, twist (do not pull) the tick. Be careful not to squeeze the insect too hard, because squeezing the tick's abdomen can force its internal contents into the bite wound, increasing the likelihood of contracting a tick-borne disease. If you don't have tweezers or a special tool for removing ticks, take a cleaning thread - tie it tightly around the tick's mouth and pull the ends of the thread to remove the tick. If the tick is still small (recently absorbed), it is usually very difficult to operate with a thread, but you can try.
- Throw the removed tick into medical alcohol and close the container with a lid.
- If possible, apply antibiotic ointment to the bite site. If there is none, treat the wound with a disinfectant.
Properly getting rid of a tick is important to prevent it from biting your dog (or you) again. It is recommended to flush the tick from the jar down the toilet with medical alcohol.

What to do if a tick has lost its head?
If in the process of removing the tick it loses its head and gets stuck under the skin, there is little that can be done. And this no longer matters, because if the tick was sick, the infection has probably already occurred. Do not try to pick it out under any circumstances, as this may slow down the healing of the wound, creating favorable conditions for the development of infection.
Most likely, the body will push out the foreign body on its own. In pharmacies you can buy special ointments (for example, Ichthyol ointment), with which you can speed up the expulsion of any foreign body from the wound and reduce inflammation. After removing the tick, observe the bite site for several days and if a large swelling appears, take your pet to the veterinarian. It is normal to have some redness or crusting at the site of the tick bite.
How to fight ticks?
There are many different ways to protect your pet from ticks - drops in the withers, anti-parasitic collars, tablets, shampoos, sprays, etc. You should also pay attention to the type of animal for which the product is intended, because not everything that is suitable for dogs is suitable for cats. Note that different agents have different durations of action and mechanisms of action. Also, the time they start working is different.
A Lyme disease vaccine for dogs is also available. If your dog spends most of the day outside, this is an excellent option to protect him from a serious disease - borreliosis. The disease is difficult to diagnose. Often the animal dies before diagnosis is made. Animals that carry the disease but are not yet clinically ill are also at risk. The bacteria secretly undermines the dog's immunity until the body can no longer cope, and unfortunately, the result is often fatal.
