Obesity of Sphynx cats after castration

Spaying or neutering cats has become increasingly popular in recent years. I have come across this figure: in the United States of America...

The animal becomes affectionate. But calmness and decreased activity, especially in the first months after sterilization of cats, increases appetite as a result of which the animal eats more, which leads to weight gain. Further, even worse – obesity. This is also the result of hormonal changes.

Experts believe that in many Sphynx cats the weight can increase by three to three and a half times. Trouble! Catastrophe! She constantly rubs under her feet, meows and asks for food. If you don't take control of this process, it could really be a disaster. This is especially true for sphinxes, a domestic cat that rarely goes outside and moves little.

In this regard, let me give some recommendations. You should know that if excess weight exceeds twenty to thirty percent of the optimal weight, consider that this is already obesity. Simply put: your cat weighs four kilograms, if you add another kilogram, sound the alarm.

Many people recommend regularly palpating: if you can’t hear the ribs, you’re obese. You don’t have to do anything, just take it and weigh it. You know your cat’s weight, and you will immediately see an increase. And second: when the child turned one year old, the doctor determined the weight. Now it must remain unchanged for the rest of her life.

After sterilization, a Sphynx cat’s energy requirement decreases: that is, food in the total volume should be eighty, even seventy percent of the amount consumed before the operation. Why? It’s clear: energy consumption is reduced. This means: the daily ration, the amount of food per day, should be reduced. If you know that your cat is prone to obesity, feel free to reduce it by another twenty percent. It’s better if you control this not “by eye,” but with a measuring stick.

Be patient and do not react to her constant requests for food. It would be a good idea to divide the daily diet into parts. It turns out that she eats all day, but the amount of food consumed remains either the same or even decreases. The cat itself will not notice this. And no rewards with food (give something tasty), because she is after surgery.

Choose your food wisely. If you buy them, then in stores there is food for cats after sterilization. They contain only ten percent fat. That is, you maintain the amount, but sharply reduce the fat content.

Some cats, after such an operation, have a tendency to form kidney stones. To prevent this, acidify your food. She, in turn, will acidify the urine and everything will be fine.

And one more very important note: do not condemn her to starvation. If your cat won't eat a lean food, give him a different one. But don't let yourself lose weight. This is even worse than obesity. If, of course, everything is in order with the liver and other organs.

Today there are every opportunity to protect your Sphynx cat from both obesity and emaciation. Moreover, this is not a cow, how much food does it need? It will take time to adapt after the operation, no more than two to three months, and everything will fall into place.
Good luck to you!
