Scabies in Sphynx cats

Experts believe that scabies are more dog disease and cats are rare in cats. But it meets, so we decided to talk to you on this subject.

This disease refers to the skin, and its small, almost microscopic ticks tolerate it. Not all, of course. Some live for a long time and do not harm, but there are also the peddles of this unpleasant illness.

This usually happens when they are active. This is especially dangerous this year, so because of the warm winter, the ticks did not go hibernation at all. The infection that they bring, as a rule, mild and passes quickly, but there are also severe cases. It should also be borne in mind that the appearance of this disease indicates a decrease in immunity and should also alert the owners in this direction.

Officially, the disease is called cat sarcoptosis, it has another name, more understandable to us: scabies itching. More understandable because the infection causes unbearable itching. First, the muzzle begins, and then goes to the whole body. There is another such disease called demodicosis. It spreads with long ticks (cigar -shaped) and sphinx cats practically do not get sick. This disease is in dogs.

The incubation period is about a week. In addition to, as we have already said, terrible itching, the loss of wool in separate areas appears. Especially near the ears, and on the face. And only then, maybe sing all over your body. Can we get infection from a cat and a person? It is unlikely to make it sense to name infection, but redness of the skin, even a red rash and, of course, itching can appear. But it passes quickly, since without a cat’s body, the disease does not exist for a long time.

What to do if you have a suspicion of the appearance of this disease? Do not try to find ticks on your cat's body yourself. This is useless: the ticks are so small that only a doctor under a microscope can consider them. Moreover: tick tick is discord. Scabies ticks are so hidden in the skin layers that it is very difficult to recognize them. Therefore, veterinarians make scrapings from the skin, give them to tests and only after that make a final diagnosis.

Scabies, as a rule, is a disease of the weak cats of the Sphinx. This is a continuation of other diseases. And, most importantly: a weakened immune system.

If the doctor nevertheless confirmed the diagnosis, the first thing is isolate the cat, do not allow infection of other cats, especially kittens, and you too. Remember: the treatment will be long - at least a month. Treatment will be prescribed depending on the period of infection, on the type of scabies and so on. The main purpose of the drugs that the doctor will prescribe is to kill ticks as soon as possible, cleanse the skin of your cat. It can be injections, and there can be different lotions with different shampoos (antibacterial). The doctor may prescribe antibiotics if the inflammatory process requires this. All these are the care of the doctor, our business strictly fulfill his recommendations and not show unnecessary initiative.

The bed, all its litter, must be disinfected, but it is better to replace. Toys, all the dishes, everything that the Sphinx cat uses well is washed with appropriate means. Do not ignore the doctor’s request, come to control after the treatment.
