Is Coconut Oil Good for Sphynx Cats?

The loving Sphynx requires meticulous grooming due to its lack of fur, which leaves owners wondering what is the best way to keep them clean…

Is Coconut Oil Good for Sphynx Cats? Coconut oil is good for their skin as well as a way to cleanse them between weekly baths. This provides moisture to their body and also gives you the opportunity to remove dirt from their skin due to their hairless qualities. It's also useful as a sunscreen if your Sphynx likes to sit by the window or go outside.

Coconut oil can be used as a daily treatment or before bathing. However, this will not replace weekly cleaning or other issues your Sphynx needs help with.

Read on for how to use coconut oil for your Sphynx and other tips to keep your kitty in top shape.

Coconut Oil Benefits and Daily Care

As mentioned above, coconut oil acts as a cleanser between baths and also moisturizes your Sphynx's skin. It has several other benefits such as sunscreen for your Sphynx and it can be used as a topical ointment due to its antibacterial properties.

Just make sure you don't use it directly on wounds. Be aware that if your cat ingests too much coconut oil, it can cause tummy problems. Using small amounts will not harm them and can be used as a way to prevent worms.

While coconut oil is generally the most commonly used natural cleansing and moisturizing product for Sphynx cats, it is not the only one.

If you don't like coconut oil, there are several alternatives:

  • Olive oil
  • Vitamin E oil
  • Delicate baby wipes
  • Napkins for cats

Just because the Sphynx needs regular grooming doesn't mean it will like it more than the average cat. Let's hope that by the time they are adopted, the breeder has already taken care to accustom them to this process.

If you are painfully aware that this is not so, do not be discouraged. It may be hard at first, buttry to make it as pleasant as possible for them so that your sphinx does not look at it as torture. Over time, they will get used to it.

Items needed for wiping with coconut oil:

  • 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • Microwave bowl
  • Two soft hand towels
  • Larger towel (in case they hate it)

The best way for daily or whenever you need it is to scoop approximately 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat the bowl for 10-20 seconds depending on your microwave.

You want the butter to be warm and melted, not hot. Once the coconut oil is at the right temperature and consistency, dip a soft washcloth into the oil. Use this cloth to rub over your Sphynx's entire body except for the eyes.

As soon as they become completely greasy, dampen a rag with warm water. First wipe their eyes with this cloth until it is covered with oil. Then use it to gently massage the oil into their skin, removing the excess from their body. This part is required.

The Sphynx is already a fat cat, and while coconut oil is great for sun protection and other benefits, you don't want to make this problem worse or you'll have to brush them again very soon.

If your Sphynx simply hates this process, play with it beforehand to wear it down. Then give them a treat. Use a large towel to half wrap the kitten so it doesn't scratch you half to death.

Hold their body with your less dominant hand while wiping with the other. Be sure to talk to them though. in a calm, loving tone so that they understand that this is not a punishment.

After this is done, give them a treat, just in case.

Using Coconut Oil Before Bathing the Sphynx

The Sphynx is a beautiful, affectionate cat, so what's wrong with getting one? Simply put, the amount of maintenance that is needed to care for them.

Don't let that be the reason you never get a sphinx. If the habit of bathing and caring for a kitten is formed early, say, when he is still a kitten, this can be an enjoyable experience for all involved.

To the point where they will actually enjoy their time in the water.

While some people use coconut oil for daily cleansing, others use it for a pre-bath moisturizing session. This method will give your cat the amount of moisture it needs and also ensure that excess fat doesn't stick to her skin.

For this treatment, simply scoop coconut oil into your hands and then rub it between your palms until it becomes liquid. Once it is wet, apply the oil all over your Canadian Sphynx's body, avoiding its eyes until they are completely covered.

If they are used to water, just wash them with a mild shampoo in warm water, you can also use dish soap or baby shampoo.

If your Sphynx absolutely hates bath time, follow the pre-drying procedure above and then place a towel on top of the water before putting him in the water. The towel gives them something to cling to so they don't feel disoriented in the water.

Something else to keep in mind is that they do not have protective hairs for their ears or eyes. Part of the bathing routine will be to clean the ears with a cotton swab dipped in warm water and/or mild soap, being careful not to go too far.

Then gently wipe their eyes with a wet washcloth soaked in only warm water.
