Your cat's goals and desires boil down to one thing: to find a sexual partner and reproduce.
Estrus in Sphynx cats is a very complex biological process that consists of several stages.
Seasonal heat in Sphynx cats
Throughout the year, cats can have several sexual cycles, since your pet is a polycyclic animal. Typically, sphinxes begin their sexual season in January and last 8-9 months. It is not uncommon to encounter individuals whose desire for sexual pleasure never disappears. Estrus in Sphynx cats lasts approximately up to 1.5 months. Estrus does not occur when the cat is breastfeeding her kittens.
Stages of estrus in a Sphynx cat.
- proestrus;
- estrus;
- metestrus;
-anestrus.
Each of these stages has its own signs and characteristics. Let's look at each stage in more detail.
Proestrus is a stage of preparation.
The stage lasts 1-3 days, the preparatory process of the animal’s genitals for insemination occurs. The first signs of this stage are the cat asking to be held, rubbing against its legs, discharge of colorless and transparent mucous fluid from the genital slit, and a slightly swollen vulva.
Estrus stage.
The stage lasts 7-10 days; during sexual intercourse, the estrus stage lasts up to 7 days. The first signs of this stage: the animal loses its appetite, meows heart-rendingly, rubs and rolls on the floor, raises its tail and rear part of the body.
Metestrus stage.
The stage lasts 1-3 days. Signs of estrus disappear, excitement goes away, the cat reacts aggressively to the male and does not allow him to approach her.
Anestrus stage.
The duration of this last stage depends on sexual intercourse; if it occurs, then 5-7 days, if not, then up to 1 month. Characteristic signs of the last stage: the Sphynx cat is not in heat, there is no sexual arousal, the cat does not pay attention to her gentleman.
Let's talk about the exact timing of insemination.
The first and second days are considered optimal; a male mates with a female 1 to 3 times. The time interval between matings lasts 12-24 hours. If you follow this simple rule, the likelihood of a Sphynx cat becoming pregnant increases several times.
It is important to remember that puberty in Sphynx cats occurs at 5-7 months, this means that the cat can already become pregnant and bears kittens, but the physiological animal is not yet ready for early pregnancy, it is better not to risk the health of your pet. After 1 year, you can safely mate your Sphynx cat.
