My Sphynx Cat Can't Meow, It Only Squeaks

Even cats that need to talk have great individual characteristics. Some cats are complete talkers, while others are just...

I provide answers to all these questions and more in this article. It's okay if some cats never acquire the ability to meow. However, squeaking can also be a sign of illness, damage, or weakness, so it's important to be able to distinguish between the two. All that matters is that our animals are happy and healthy.

Why do cats meow?

I want to briefly discuss the origin of the term "cat meow" before getting into the specifics of the article. This may make it clear to us if our furry friends' lack of vocalization skills is a problem. A cat does not usually meow in nature. On the contrary, it is a sound that they catch when they are near people or other domestic cats who have already mastered it. There are two main hypotheses for the origin of meowing:

  • Cats have found that humans are more sensitive to meow frequency than other sounds, making it a more effective way to get our attention.
  • Ever since cats have seen humans rush to comfort their crying babies, they have been striving to imitate that sound when they meow at us.

It is interesting to note that cats meow exclusively at humans. To get my attention, my cat keeps meowing and rubbing against everything. It is actually rare, if not impossible, to watch two cats meow at each other. Cats use scent and other vocalizations such as growls, murmurs, and strong hisses for intraspecific communication. So it doesn't really matter if your cat can only squeak and not meow. They communicate with you or other members of your family only through meowing. Instead, you can decipher your cat's messages by its squeak or body language, and your feline friend will develop a unique method of expressing their needs and desires to you.

Why is my cat squeaking instead of meowing?

While your cat may still communicate with you in other ways if she stops meowing, it's still important to understand why. Your cat is probably fine if she has always made this sound. However, if your cat's normal meow starts to sound squeaky, it could be a sign of illness or injury. The six most likely explanations for the inability to meow are listed below. Check what you think is applicable, and if you have any doubts, take your cat to the vet.

Congenital defects of the vocal cords

Their vocal cords provide the meow that we associate with cats. Cats may not be able to make these sounds if these vocal cords do not mature properly. Instead, their vocal cords may resist and produce a creaky sound. It is possible that your cat's vocal cords have been damaged since birth as a result of a birth defect. The area around the vocal cords, or the vocal cords themselves, may have a defect that prevents them from working properly. Another possibility is that the nerves that control the larynx and vocal cords were never properly developed.

A veterinarian's confirmation is the only way to be sure if your cat has a congenital disease. But it is unlikely that this will lead to any serious problems. Your cat may simply be unable to speak, as if she were blind or deaf. However, other than that, they are happy and healthy.

Growth retardation of the vocal cords

Cats get bigger and bigger as they get older. It also affects the larynx and vocal cords, among other internal organs. The vocal cords can stretch if they do not develop properly and at a rate in proportion to the rest of the body. As a result, your cat's meow may sound squeaky. When kittens are healthy cats, damage to the throat or some kind of trauma usually results in abnormal growth. Children can mistakenly be overly rough with kittens by squeezing and squeezing their throats. Later in life, this can affect the cat's ability to meow.

For this reason, it is extremely important to teach young children how to properly hold kittens, as well as to prevent other injuries. You don't want to deal with the aftermath of injured cats or wonder, "Why is my cat so afraid of everything?" as a result of an injury that could have been prevented.

Diseases and infections

Your cat may have an illness or infection if her meow starts to sound squeaky out of the blue. A number of medical problems can affect a cat's ability to meow, including:

  • Upper respiratory tract infections. Your cat's upper respiratory tract can become infected with viruses and bacteria. Examples of common feline viruses include feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus, and bronchisepsis. You will experience symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and discharge from the eyes and nose, which are similar to those of a human common cold.
  • Hyperthyroidism: cats with hyperthyroidism have an overactive thyroid gland. This gland can press on the vocal cords as it grows and is located in the neck. Other symptoms are hyperactivity, increased hunger and weight loss. Hyperthyroidism is likely if you notice that your cat drinks a lot of water and meows loudly.
  • Paralysis of the larynx: here the laryngeal nerve is paralyzed, which makes normal opening and closing of the larynx impossible. You can hear your cat's squeaky meow or mine's hoarse, weak meow. In addition, breathing problems will be noticeable and you may have noisy breathing, coughing, and difficulty breathing.
  • Polyps of the nasopharynx. Polyps are tiny growths of tissue that form in the ear canal. Expanding, they can block the neck when lowered there. As a result, they will not only have a squeaky meow; they will also have breathing problems. Other signs include head shaking, ear tapping, and falling.

You should take your cat to the veterinarian if you observe any of the above symptoms. Treatment is an option for all of these diseases. Antibiotics may be needed to treat infections; surgery or iodine therapy may be used to treat hyperthyroidism; and polyps can be removed surgically. There is no reason why your cat cannot fully recover and resume their meowing in a short period of time with timely treatment.

vocal cord injury

I have already said that rough handling of kittens can lead to improper growth of the vocal cords. But a throat injury later in life can also cause your cat to squeak instead of meow. When the larynx and vocal apparatus are damaged, they cannot effectively produce meows and other sounds.

For a cat that has lost its meow, the injuries are usually quite serious. They may have gotten into a cat fight. Or perhaps they got their throats badly stained while trying to escape from the area they were trapped in while exploring. Be sure to book an appointment with your veterinarian. They can help ease the pain while your cat is recovering and suggest anything else that might help the recovery.

severe hunger or thirst

My cat meows and is constantly hungry. Every morning she wakes me up at dawn with her insistent demands to eat. However, cats' bodies can weaken when they no longer feel hungry. They squeak instead of meowing because they can barely. This is unlikely to be the cause of your cat's inability to meow; instead it squeaks. You can rule this out if your cat is eating and you are giving her the right amount of food. But if you come across a stray cat that squeaks, this is very likely. You have no idea how long they have been looking for food and their bodies can be extremely emaciated.

The same symptoms appear in dehydrated cats. Water is necessary for the normal functioning of every cell and organ of our body, including the vocal apparatus. A cat's voice will be hoarse and squeaky if it is severely dehydrated. Make your cat drink more to get rid of this problem quickly. Water fountains are fantastic, or you can try seasoning the water with something like chicken broth.

Not used to people

Cats only meow to communicate with humans, as already explained. When I go to bed at night, my cat meows to get my attention. When I sneeze, my cat meows. My cat keeps meowing at the door; Why? You guessed it, asking me to let her out. Cats always try to communicate with people through meowing. Therefore, cats that have never been around humans may not be able to meow. Have you recently adopted a stray cat? If this is the case, then their squeaky meow may be the result of this. Over time, your cat may learn to meow and communicate with you, or it may never fully develop its voice.

Should I be worried that my cat can't meow but only squeak?

Every cat is unique and some are more talkative with their owners than others. Although my cat is constantly meowing, I have had cats in the past that were mostly silent. Don't worry if your cat only squeaks and doesn't meow. This is such a cute and distinctive feature of your kitty. From this it follows that a squeaky meow can indicate both illness and injury. For this reason, even if you think everything is fine, I would advise you to visit the veterinarian. Always check if your furry feline friend is healthy by checking it again. You may not forgive yourself if you did something but ignored it.

Also, if your cat used to meow normally but has recently begun to squeak, you should contact your veterinarian immediately. There are even more reasons to look if noisy meowing is accompanied by other signs of illness. Key clinical indicators to look out for include:

  • Sudden and unexplained weight loss
  • Increase or decrease in appetite
  • Difficulty breathing and breathing with an open mouth
  • Sneezing, coughing and nasal congestion
  • Discharge from the nose and mouth
  • Weakness and extreme lethargy
  • Sudden behavioral changes such as aggression
  • Your cat is trying to meow, but nothing comes out

Will my cat ever learn to meow correctly?

You can relax if you have ruled out any underlying medical issues as the source of your cat's raspy meow. All cats are unique, as I have said more than once. Your cat's distinctive squeak can be interpreted as a powerful and distinctive sign of personality. Your kitty is simply unique! However, you may be curious if your cat will ever be able to meow properly. and their age has a significant effect on this. Unlike adult cats, which never learned to meow, kittens still have time to develop their voice.

Kittens learn to meow

If your house cat is a little squeaky meow, don't worry - most house cats learn to meow when they become kittens. They usually have a voice, they just don't know how to use it yet. Immediately after birth, kittens begin to use and exercise their vocal cords. Some vocalizations will be present immediately after birth, but cats may not develop a voice until they are 3–4 months old. Unneutered cats may carry a litter of kittens if you observe any signs of labor in them. Then you will be lucky enough to witness this training procedure with your own eyes.

To make matters worse, some cats do not reach the full maturity of their adult meow until they are one year old. It's possible that the 12-week-old kitten you adopted is still developing its voice if it makes squeaky sounds. As they mature into adult cats, you can watch them as they learn to meow. So if your kitten doesn't meow, don't be alarmed. When they master this vocalization, the kittens begin to squeak or meow softly. If your kitten appears to be weak and lethargic, this is a much more serious cause for concern. However, if they are joyful, active and lively, be patient with them while they develop their meowing skills. They just need a little time and their voice will come!

Adult cats learn to meow

It is unlikely that an adult cat will learn to meow if it only squeaks instead of meowing. This is a skill that is often developed during the kitten stage, as just described. Pissing adult cats probably weren't around people or meowed when they were kittens, which is why they never learned the skill. Wild cats and kittens taken by rescue organizations can learn to meow over time. The more time they spend with you and other people, the more likely they are to imitate your voice and meow. However, many cats never learned to meow. They will continue to squeak and use this method to try and get your attention.

Things are a little different with older cats who cannot meow due to illness or injury. These cats know how to meow and have not lost the necessary abilities; instead, something prevents them from using those abilities. Their quiet voice will return once the health issue is resolved.
